Historic Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church stands in downtown Montgomery fulfilling the prayer of her third pastor, J.B. Cumming, who said in 1895, "May God bless this heroic congregation, crown their efforts with success and so shape the policy of the church that it may become what it was from the first intended to be - a great people's Church whose influence would be felt not only in Montgomery, but throughout Alabama." "We are here for you" is Dexter's call to witness, disciple, and love unconditionally. Dexter is a place of love, Faith, Forgiveness, Acceptance, Hope, Healing, Recovery and Celebration.
Dexter Avenue has persevered through almost fifty years of "urban flight" The congregation remains dedicated to serving the inner city and is beginning to see the results of the downtown area's new construction and redevelopment projects, in both attendance and membership.
